1. Vortex Optics Diamondback Second Focal Plane Riflescopes

4.5/5 - (2 votes)
Quick fact:

The Vortex Optics Diamondback is a go-to hunting scope known for its image quality, build quality and the feel of its turrets and fast-focus eyepiece. It’s designed to offer a variety of configurations, making it a versatile choice for different shooting needs.

What we like:
  • High-quality optics for clear visuals.
  • Durable aeronautical-grade aluminum construction.
  • Versatile Dead-Hold BDC MOA Reticle for varied shooting ranges.
  • Waterproof and fog-proof due to argon purging.
What we not like:
  • Glare issues during specific lighting conditions.
  • Difficulty in target acquisition at higher magnifications.
Top reviews from the United States: “This is a great mid range scope. It’s by no means comparable to a similar spec Leopold, but I didn’t expect that. So I wasn’t let down. There. That’s said. At 100 and 200 yards the target is crisp and clean with a little adjustment of the parallax. And with a little fine tuning of the diopter, you can see clearly far past that at 24x.
Sighting in is a little trickier at 100 at 24x than your typical 3×9 scope just because of magnification, so ensure you get a competent gun shop to bore sight you’re rifle for you as far as possible. Don’t let bass pro do it. They bore sight to about 10 yards and usually don’t adjust windage and elevation because as they have told me, “we aren’t gunsmiths”. But once you get a good solid bore sight then ensure your parallax is set correctly with no movement in the scope and proceed accordingly. It took me a while I’ll admit. But once in, from a lead sled the groups were great.
As for light, this thing is no Leopold but comes awfully close for 1/3 the money. As soon as I can see what I’m trying to aim at in the morning out of a deer stand, within 10-15 minutes I can see it clearly through the scope. Same goes at dusk. When I can’t see through my scope anymore, I’ve got about 10 minutes of useable light left to pack up and get out of my tree stand and head on back to camp.
This scope shines from 9x to 16x. Really clear. With very little parallax adjustment needed between magnifications in this range.
It works well for making adjustments on the fly at the range as well, to tighten up groups and what not. I have never shot past 200 so I am not to familiar with bullet drop or wind compensation using the tactical reticle.
Scope itself seems to be built well. I have hunted in soaking rain and never noticed any clouding while hunting, or had any problems the next time I unpacked my rifle. Turrets are solid and require steady pressure to turn. Glass was super clean and very impressive when first purchased and has stayed that way with simply using flip up covers. Comes with a sunshade I have yet to use as I hunt and shoot targets mainly in Tennessee and Georgia.
So. I like this glass a good bit and am impressed by its value for money, even though I would prefer the much better low light performance of the far more expensive Leopold, I’d save the money and get this.
That being said, I wish I’d of spent a couple of hundred more dollars and purchased the same specs on a model with a red illuminated reticle. After getting used to the bright red reticle on my AR-15 I am now so accustomed to the illumination that I have a little trouble seeing the hash marks on this scope now. But I don’t think Vortex offered such an option on a 6x24x50 then.
So all and all: Good clear bright glass in the sun. Works pretty well in low light. Built solid. Excellent turrets. Good fine tune diopter adjustments. Big frame looks great on any rifle. Really could use a throw lever for getting that magnification dial around, but those can be purchased. But for the money, it really can’t be be beaten and still get a lifetime warranty.” – wakkajawakka
Trending review: “This scope is something of an enigma. The Diamondback line is Vortex’s “mid-range” optics, but this scope has a few features that are primarily seen on the “higher-end” ones. Adding to the puzzle is the conspicuous absence of a couple features that are commonly found on vortex’s “budget grade” optics. Ready to dive in? Let’s go!
The Good:
First and foremost, there’s the glass. The diamondback line has a phenomenally-clear-glass-for-the-money reputation, and this scope upps the ante; if just by a little bit. The lenses are impressively clear and free of distortion, multicolored, and free of any weird tints. Then there’s the reticle: It’s first focal plane, and of the “Christmas Tree” design. It’s beautifully done and provides a TON of useful markers for holdovers and wind drift. It’s also really intuitive, a couple seconds looking at it and you can figure out where to aim without even reading the manual.( READ THE MANUAL ANYWAY- IT’S ALWAYS A GOOD IDEA)
Next is the parallax adjustment. It’s a large knob on the left side helpfully marked with graduations from 20-500 yards. It turns smoothly, if a bit stiffly, but remains where you turn it.
Following that is the “tactical style” turrets. They turn with an audible (and sometimes tactile) click to let you know when you’ve made an adjustment, and are capable of being reset, so zero always means zero. Yes, it’s a little thing, but it does make life a lot easier.
Finally is the tube. It’s 30mm, instead of the usual 1″, so it lets in more light. The 44mm objective does the same thing. A sunshade comes standard.
The Bad:
This one surprised me. That fantastic reticle is not illuminated, which may not seem like a big deal.. and it isn’t..as long as you’re using it at max magnification in broad daylight. If you need it at less-than-maximum, or a less-than-ideal-lighting environment; finding those critical aiming points is going to be a challenge. Then there’s the parallax adjustment. Yes; it’s numbered from 20-500, but most of the dial is concentrated on the range from 20-100. There are no detents either, so you don’t really know (without looking directly at it) what your parallax setting is. Then there’s the tube. Instead of a one piece tube; the bell of the objective is actually a separate piece that is then attached (likely screwed into) the main tube. Not really a “bad” thing, but it is a possible failure point.
All that said, I like this scope. If I was building an 800 yard benchrest .308, I’d put this scope on it no questions asked.” – Matthewj M.

Reassuring review: “probably one of if not the best scope for long range shooting in this price range. great entry level for PRS or F-class” – Camel

Most-discussed review: “Let me start with, I love Vortex products. In daylight this scope worked just fine at each power out to 200 yards. Where it fell short was at the end of daylight I could not see the reticle. For daylight shooting it is Great. Beware if using it for hunting.” – Diver43

Favorite review: “I have 3 of the FFP diamondbacks. The reticle is easy to understand, and no need to dial. I use them ranging from NRL 22 matches to long-range predator hunting. No complaints are hard to beat for the price, excellent clarity, and bullet proof warranty.” – Matt B.

Top reviews from the United States: Loved the Vortex Scope and hat. Cannot wait to use it on my next upcoming hunt.” – Amazon Customer

Trending review: I like Vortex products. This is a very nice scope for the price. It is a bit large. Put it on my AR seems solid, easy to site in ,very clear.” – Swinghardlokup

Reassuring review: “All is good just no hat in box” – Lee C.

Most-discussed review: “I mounted this scope on a new 243 Winchester rifle. It was very easy to see the bullet impacts at 100 yards. I didn’t even need my spotting scope. I have many scopes on various rifles and have spent wayyy more on different scopes of different manufactures. Don’t get me wrong. This is not a million yard competition scope. It has a halo around the sight picture which is expected. But it is clear and maintains point of impact thru all its settings. I would recommend this as a quality budget scope for people who cannot afford a high end scope.” – william

Favorite review: “I just bought this Vortex Optics Crossfire II 6-18×44 scope but haven’t mounted it yet. Although I have looked it over closely and it feels like a quality scope. It has very clear optics with very smooth tight adjustments. There is no slop anywhere and it feels like it is solidly constructed. Vortex scopes seem to be a very good value to the price. I would definately consider buying Vortex over a Leupold scope that demands a premium because of the brand. I’ll mount this scope on my 30-06, and hopefully make some 250 yd shots, and put it through a rigorous test.
Now the FYI; When I bought this scope on Amazon the page stated “Only 2 left in stock – order soon” but a few days after the scope was delivered the page STILL says, you guessed it, “Only 2 left in stock – order soon”. So if you need time to decide don’t rush your buying decision. Unfortunately there are some questionable marketing practices going on here.” – Richard

Updated review: “Awesome scope for the money. It is my first Vortex. I was so impressed with its performance, I bought a second one for another rifle. Easy to zoom and focus. Holds a solid zero on a 7mm Rem Mag. I will remain a loyal customer if they keep building them like this.” – Amazon Customer

Top reviews from the United States: “Good scope for the price. I purchased it for my Remington 700 tactical .308. I usually go with nikon but you can’t beat the Vortex warranty and for the magnification the comparable nikons were over $100 more and I’m on a tight budget for this build and after reading the reviews I decided to give it a shot. The scope works well got it zeroed in quickly and has held so far I have made some sub moa groups, the the turrets are cool work good I like how once you zero your scope you can set that at zero. I actually contacted vortex customers support to ask a question for what hiegth scope rings should i get for my set up (weaver 20moa picatinny rail with low 30mm 6 bolt rings) their support team is A+++++ supper fast response and exactly what I needed to know plus some recommendations. The only reason I didn’t give the scope a five star was the clarity of the scope is not as good as the nikon, it’s great up to 16x but past that it starts to suffer I tried playing with the eye relief and parallax but can’t keep it perfect past 16x and I question the true magnification my 4x12x42 nikon prostaff pretty much looks out just as far. There’s an old barn about a mile out past the river valley from my property and the Vortex just barely brings it in closer than the nikon of significantly lower magnification so in hind sight I could have got the cheaper nikon and had basically as much scope. But like I said the warranty, turrets, and customer service make the scope worth buying, plus the clarity isn’t bad just not better than Nikon.” – TAC DRIVER

Trending review: “Phenomenal scope foe the money,I picked mine up on sale for way under what’s is going for in most places,I couldn’t be happier great glass, great features at this price point, solid built, put on my browning western hunter in 300 prc, holds zero, easy to zero, mil dots subsections hold true out to 500 yards, I have had tons of scopes from low end to very high end, night force, leupold mark 5 hd, etc. And yes this scope isn’t in there zone but st this price gow could you do better and a no questions asked lifetime warranty, I hunt and long range target shoot,if you are a major competitor or in Afghanistan fighting sure pay the big bucks and go with a 2000 or 3000+ scope it makes sense but if your like me and hunt elk, white tail and targets this scope is everything plus what you could ever need or want..” – Tommy

Reassuring review: “Scope is exactly as described and is perfect for taking those 200 yard shots at prairie dogs.” – JIM PARKS

Most-discussed review: “When I see a one star review given on a rifle scope because some knucklehead does not know how to mount or shim a rifle optic I have to say I get a bit miffed. Especially because Vortex will fix or replace anything which is wrong with anything they sell. All it takes is a phone call or a an email. It’s the same with Amazon. You get a whole month to return whatever you bought. I will now quit my little tirade to say that this optic is simply outstanding. For the price, this is an incredible . Great glass, superb quality, just outstanding. Can’t recommend it enough. Unless, Of course, one does not know I did away wit, Of course, one does not know Diddly and about optics, either mounting them or using them. There is another ninja operator complaining and that he whore she can’t get a decent focus at 20 power inside of 50 yards…why would you buy a 20x mil dot reticle–or any mil dot reticle–to shoot at a target 50 yards away?
Maybe they were confused and thought they were in the airsoft department” – Konrad

Favorite review: “I have not actually mounted this scope and shot it yet. Image through scope is crisp and as clear as you would expect. I’m rating 5 stars because of the outstanding customer service. Shortly after arrival I noticed the zoom knob on my scope was a little loose. I realized it would slide forwards and backwards, and eventually it came off it’s setting. I was pretty frustrated since it was brand new, so I left a calm message with Vortex explaining the situation on a Saturday. Even though it was outside normal business hours I got a call back within an hour saying to send it back and it would be fixed free of charge, they paid shipping and everything.
I guess this is what you hope to happen when you pay around $500 for something and it arrives less than 100%, but it was refreshing to see a company stand by their word and fix the scope with absolutely no hassle, and to get back to me outside of normal business hours was totally unexpected. So if you’re hesitant spending the money I can assure you Vortex is a company that takes pride in their product, and would rather loose money than have a dissatisfied customer out there.” – John Ross Harrison

Updated review: “This optic has some good and bad things about it
Pros:
The VIP warranty plan from vortex is amazing.
For the price, you get a decent optic with variable zoom that is fun for shooting on the weekends
Has all of the adjustment knobs and covers to keep zero and the ability to adjust where you want and then set that as your zero.
Cons:
At full zoom, you really lose a lot of the clarity. I couldn’t see a target very well in the middle of the day at 200 yards
It isn’t an FFP optic (but I wouldn’t expect it to be for this price range)
The focus knob is at the end of the sight and is underneath my flip up caps. So it just causes a problem trying to focus with the flip up cap on.
Overall:
For the price of the scope, I think it performs well and has a great protection plan behind it from a great company. I love vortex stuff.” – josh.k

Its pros are: it is accurate at various ranges; the precision glide erector system gives you smooth, responsive magnification; the build is sturdy and durable; it is fog and waterproof; and it has a lifetime warranty.

However, there may be some blurring as you reach the maximum magnification. Bottom line is, it is the best overall Vortex scope on the market. It has high magnifying power range of six times by 24 times for distant shooting, and it has EBR-2C MRAD reticle and first focal plane design.

Our Opinion about The Best Vortex Tactical Rifle Scope?

Having read the above guide on what is the best Vortex scope, you should be able to settle on a Vortex scope that suits your needs and budget.

We recommend the Vortex Viper Scope, which has a parallax adjustment feature. Parallax adjustment is a feature that allows the shooter to fine-tune the focus of the reticle (crosshairs) on the target image.

This can be especially important at longer ranges, where even small misalignments between the reticle and the target can result in a significant impact shift on the bullet’s point of impact.

The parallax adjustment feature on the Vortex Optics Viper allows the shooter to adjust the focus of the reticle for a more accurate shot.
